Choose Your Distinctive Lamination Finish
Each film finish delivers distinct optical and tactile characteristics tailored for corporate authority, high-impact retail, or boutique luxury.
Matt Lamination
A silky smooth, glare-free non-reflective finish that exudes understated sophistication. Subdues harsh reflections under bright indoor lighting, ensuring crystal-clear text readability.
- Feel: Smooth, satiny, non-slip touch
- Best For: Corporate brochures, stationery, business cards
- Spot UV Ready: Yes, outstanding contrast
Gloss Lamination
A mirror-like, ultra-reflective sheen that deepens colour saturation and dynamic range. Colours appear richer, contrast is amplified, and photography leaps off the page.
- Feel: Glass-smooth, ultra-slick surface
- Best For: Photo book covers, retail packaging, takeaway menus
- Wipe Clean: Highly resistant to fingerprints & grease
Soft-Touch (Velvet)
The undisputed benchmark in luxury print finishing. Features a micro-velour tactile texture that feels like soft peach skin or Italian suede. Creates an immediate premium impression.
- Feel: Velvety, warm, plush tactile sensation
- Best For: Luxury business cards, high-end packaging, invites
- Pairing: The ultimate base for Spot UV & Gold Foil
Anti-Scuff Matt
Engineered with an ultra-hard surface layer that eliminates white fingernail scuffing and friction wear, particularly on solid black and dark saturated ink backgrounds.
- Feel: Smooth hardened matte barrier
- Best For: Restaurant menus, annual reports, presentation folders
- Dark Ink Defense: 100% scratch resistant
Surface Lamination vs. Encapsulation
Choosing between a sleek flush-trimmed luxury laminate and a heavy-duty waterproof encapsulated plastic pouch.
| Feature / Parameter | Flush Thermal Lamination | Sealed Encapsulation |
|---|---|---|
| Edge Treatment | Flush-trimmed clean edges (no plastic lip) | 3mm - 5mm sealed clear plastic border around sheet |
| Film Thickness | 25 to 45 Microns (ultra-thin, natural paper feel) | 75 to 250 Microns (heavy, rigid plastic pouch) |
| Water Resistance | Surface splash proof (spill-resistant) | 100% Submersible waterproof |
| Aesthetic & Feel | High elegance: Matt, Velvet, Gloss, Anti-Scuff | Utilitarian commercial plastic coating |
| Best Applications | Business cards, book covers, presentation folders | Kitchen recipe cards, pool safety notices, factory guides |
| Subsequent Finishes | Spot UV varnish, foil stamping & die-cutting | Cannot accept spot UV or foil stamping |
Pair Lamination with Embellishments
Lamination reaches its pinnacle when combined with high-build raised Spot UV varnish or metallic hot foil blocking.
Matt Lamination + Spot UV
The contrast between a non-reflective, satiny Matt lamination and a high-build 3D gloss Spot UV varnish creates a mesmerising tactile effect that draws eyes straight to logos and headlines.
Soft-Touch + Gold Foil
The ultimate in bespoke print luxury. Velvet-soft tactile paper background paired with gleaming metallic Gold, Silver, or Rose Gold foil stamped under heat and hydraulic pressure.
Lamination + Custom Die-Cut
Thermal film encapsulates the printed fibres, allowing complex curved cuts, packaging apertures, and fold lines to be die-cut with razor sharpness and zero frayed edges.
Precision Heated Calender Application in 4 Steps
Our automated thermal laminators bond optical grade films under controlled heat and hydraulic pressure with zero blistering or sheet curl.
Ink Cure & Dryness Audit
Printed sheets are verified for complete ink drying. Zero trapped solvents or powder spray ensure flawless optical clarity with no silvering.
Heated Calender Bonding
Sheets pass between a precision heated mirror-chrome roller (120°C) and heavy pneumatic pressure roller, melting thermal adhesive directly into paper pores.
Flying Knife Burst Slitting
High-speed rotating burst cutters sever the film precisely at sheet overlap margins with an anti-curl decurling bar maintaining flat delivery.
Final Guillotine & QC
Laminated sheets are trimmed to final millimeter dimensions on automated guillotines with clean flush borders ready for folding or shipping.

The Lamination Advantage with Printways UK
We combine high-temperature thermal calender equipment with strict UK quality control and fast turnaround.
Uniform Calender Heat
Electronically controlled heating rollers eliminate hot/cold spots, ensuring zero silvering, cloudiness, or trapped air bubbles.
Anti-Curl Technology
Inline tension decurling bars counteract single-sided film tension, delivering perfectly flat sheets that feed cleanly through downstream bindery.
Eco-Friendly Polypropylene
We utilise recyclable oriented polypropylene (BOPP) thermal films that can be repulped and recycled in modern municipal UK de-inking facilities.
Rapid Turnaround
Thermal lamination is fully dry immediately upon exit from the press, allowing instantaneous trimming, creasing, and same-day dispatch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about thermal lamination finishes, writeability, encapsulation, and paper weights.
Gloss lamination provides a mirror-like high-shine finish that deepens colours and contrast, making photography pop. Matt lamination offers an elegant, glare-free smooth finish that subdues reflections and enhances legibility. Soft-Touch (or Velvet) lamination has a matte appearance but with a unique peach-skin, velvety micro-texture that feels extraordinarily luxurious to touch.
Lamination is a thin, flush-trimmed protective film (25 to 45 microns) heat-bonded directly to the paper surface, leaving clean trimmed edges. Encapsulation seals the print inside a much thicker plastic pouch (75 to 250 microns) with a heat-sealed plastic border around the entire perimeter, making it completely 100% waterproof and wipe-clean for restaurant menus and outdoor checklists.
Thermal film lamination works best on coated silk or gloss papers of 170gsm or heavier (up to 450gsm card). Applying thermal film to very thin papers below 150gsm can cause sheet curling due to film tension, while uncoated or heavily textured papers do not provide the mirror-smooth bonding surface required for bubble-free thermal adhesion.
Matt lamination can be written on using a standard ballpoint pen (biro) or permanent marker. Gloss and Soft-Touch lamination require permanent markers (like Sharpies), as water-based inks will smudge. If you need appointment cards or loyalty cards where users write or stamp dates, we recommend laminating only the front side and leaving the reverse uncoated.
Lamination creates an ultra-smooth, uniform surface with consistent surface tension (dyne level). Matt or Soft-Touch lamination creates the dramatic matte background required to make glossy Spot UV varnish or gleaming metallic hot foil stamping pop with breathtaking tactile and visual contrast.
Yes! When heavyweight card (250gsm - 400gsm) with heavy ink coverage is folded, the paper fibres can crack, revealing the white core of the paper. Thermal lamination acts as a flexible, elastic bridge that holds the paper fibres together, ensuring razor-sharp, crack-free folds on brochure covers, presentation folders, and greetings cards.
