How to Set Up Artwork for Foil Stamping
Follow these technical standards to ensure crisp die etching and razor-clean metallic transfer.
Separate 100% Black Mask
Provide a separate PDF layer or page named 'Foil Mask'. All foil elements must be 100% Solid Black (K:100%) with no tints or feathered shadows.
Pure Vector Paths Only
Metal stamping dies are CNC milled directly from vector path data (AI, EPS, PDF). All typography must be converted to curves/outlines.
Minimum 0.75pt Stroke
Lines must be at least 0.75pt (approx 0.25mm) in thickness and text at least 8pt. Micro-fine hairlines cannot hold heated pressure dies.
Watch Negative Counters
Ensure adequate spacing inside enclosed counters (like the inside loop of 'e' or 'o') to prevent melted foil from bridging together.
The Artisan Hot Foil Blocking Process
Combining master press craftsmanship with precision temperature regulation and hydraulic pressure control.
CNC Die Engraving
Your vector foil mask is engraved into a durable brass or magnesium metal plate with hand-finished bevelled edges.
Honeycomb Heat Lock
The die is locked onto a heated honeycomb chase on a heavy Heidelberg cylinder or platen press and brought up to 130°C.
Hydraulic Impression
Foil ribbon feeds across the sheet as tonnes of hydraulic pressure strike the paper, transferring the foil and creating a debossed bite.
Hand Inspection & Pack
Every sheet is individually inspected under high-CRI inspection lamps, trimmed to size, and packed with protective tissue interleaving.
Popular Foil Embellished Products
Order standard foil finished stationery or contact our finishing desk for custom duplexed luxury card stocks.
Foil Stamped Business Cards
450gsm - 700gsm cards with Gold, Silver, Rose Gold, or Copper foil.
Wedding & VIP Invitations
Gold and rose gold foil invitations on textured Colorplan and cotton paper.
Foil Presentation Folders
Corporate pitch wallets with metallic crests and foil-stamped lettering.
Foil Packaging & Sleeves
Cosmetic and boutique packaging boxes embellished with metallic blocking.
The Foil Stamping Advantage with Printways UK
We combine precision CNC brass die engineering with artisan hydraulic presses and strict quality assurance.
Artisan CNC Brass Dies
High-resolution computer-engraved brass dies with micro-fine bevels deliver sharp serifs and crisp fine lines without bridging.
Heavy Platen Hydraulic Pressure
Tonnes of hydraulic platen impression drive the heated foil deep into the fibres, producing a crisp debossed indentation you can feel.
Comprehensive Foil Shades
Stocking Kurz and leading European foils in gold, silver, rose gold, copper, black, white, and holographic diffraction patterns.
Tissue Interleaved Packing
Embellished items are hand-inspected and packed with protective interleaving to prevent metallic scuffing during transit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about hot foil blocking, digital sleeking, dies, and artwork mask files.
Foil stamping (often referred to as hot foil blocking) is a premium print embellishment technique that transfers a thin metallic or pigmented polyester film onto paper using a custom-engraved metal die (brass or magnesium), calibrated heat (120°C - 140°C), and substantial hydraulic pressure. The heat activates a thermal sizing adhesive layer on the foil, permanently bonding it to the paper fibres with a crisp, subtle debossed indentation.
Traditional hot foil utilizes a custom metal die stamped under high pressure, creating a tactile debossed 'bite' into the paper; it works beautifully on thick uncoated and textured stocks (like G.F Smith or cotton papers) and is exceptionally economical on quantities of 250+. Digital raised foil requires no metal die; instead, metallic foil adheres to a raised digital polymer layer on smooth laminated paper, making it cost-effective for ultra-short runs of 50 or 100 items.
Our library includes classic Bright Metallic Gold, Matte Champagne Gold, High-Shine Silver, Brushed Aluminium, Rose Gold, Warm Copper, Rainbow Holographic, Gloss Black, and White pigment foils. We also supply custom jewel shades including Emerald Green, Ruby Red, and Royal Sapphire Blue upon request.
Foil artwork must be supplied as a separate PDF layer or standalone vector file named 'Foil Mask'. All foil shapes must be 100% solid black (K:100%) vector paths with no tints, gradients, or raster pixels. Minimum line thickness should be at least 0.75pt (0.25mm) and text minimum 8pt to prevent fine serifs or counters from closing in under heated pressure.
Yes! One of the greatest advantages of traditional hot foil stamping is its exceptional performance on uncoated, textured, and fibrous papers such as Colorplan, linen-embossed stocks, and 540gsm duplexed boards. The heated metal die presses smooth into the texture, leaving a crisp, shimmering metallic impression.
Yes! Combining metallic hot foil with a Soft-Touch velvet lamination and selective Spot UV gloss creates an extraordinary multi-layered luxury piece. We frequently produce executive corporate stationery and award certificates combining these finishes.
