Precision Die Cutting & Custom Shape Printing for UK Brands
Break free from standard rectangles. Printways delivers industrial-grade precision die cutting, kiss cutting, creasing, and perforating for shaped business cards, custom packaging cartons, presentation folders with pockets, bottle neck collars, and retail stickers. Every contour is cut with razor-sharp repeatability using laser-formed steel dies.
Custom-shaped printed collateral lifts brand recall by over 40% compared to standard rectangular paper cuts.
Infinite Shape Freedom
Create exact brand silhouettes, geometric cuts, rounded corners, apertures, and internal windows.
Single-Pass Multi-Finishing
Simultaneously cut outer edges, crease fold lines, and micro-perforate tear stubs in one press strike.
Anti-Crack Folding Creases
Calibrated channel matrix scoring prevents heavy ink and coated card fibres from cracking along fold spines.
Structural Packaging Rigidity
Engineered self-locking tabs, tuck-in flaps, crash-lock bases, and folder pockets ready for fast assembly.
Versatile Cutting, Creasing & Forming Techniques
Every product requires a tailored cutting methodology. Printways operates platen die cutters, rotary cylinders, and digital CAD plotters to accommodate both large-volume manufacturing and bespoke prototypes.
Through Die Cutting
The cutting knife penetrates 100% through the paper or board, yielding fully detached individual shaped pieces. Ideal for custom-shaped business cards, swing tags, coasters, and display header cards.
Kiss Cutting (Stickers & Labels)
The steel blade cuts through the top printed vinyl or gloss paper layer while leaving the silicon backing sheet 100% intact. Customers easily peel individual custom-shaped stickers from a multi-sticker sheet.
Channel Matrix Creasing
Rounded, blunt steel rules press the card into a precise phenolic matrix channel. This stretches the paper fibres symmetrically, enabling effortless 90° or 180° folding without surface cracking or toner splitting.
Micro-Perforation Strips
Toothed serrated blades create alternating micro-slits and uncut paper ties (e.g. 17 or 34 teeth per inch). The coupon, stub, or raffle ticket remains firmly attached during handling but tears off effortlessly when needed.
Bespoke Structural Packaging
Engineered folding box carton dies complete with locking tabs, dust flaps, glue joints, and finger-pull apertures. Designed to protect retail merchandise, bottles, cosmetics, and luxury confectionery.
Multi-Finish Synergy
Die cutting pairs seamlessly with our luxury finishes. Combine custom contours with Hot Foil Stamping, 3D Raised Spot UV, and Soft-Touch Lamination for the ultimate premium tactile result.
Materials & Board Specifications We Die-Cut
From lightweight paper to structural fluted board, our steel-rule tooling and hydraulic pressures are calibrated to each material's density and tensile resistance.
Artwork Setup: How to Prepare Your Vector Dieline
Accurate dieline preparation ensures laser steel-rule dies align flawlessly with your printed graphics. Follow these four professional rules in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign:
Dedicated "Dieline" Layer
Keep your cutting and creasing paths on a separate top layer named exactly "Dieline" or "Cutting Guide". Never merge or flatten dielines with underlying artwork.
100% Spot Magenta & Overprint
Apply a 1pt stroke formatted with a distinct Spot Colour swatch named "Dieline" (100% Magenta). Enable "Overprint Stroke" in the Attributes panel.
Standard Line Coding
Use standard engineering line styles: Solid Line = Through Cut (blades); Dashed Line = Crease / Fold; Dotted Line = Tear-off Perforation.
3mm Bleed & Quiet Zones
Extend all background graphics 3mm beyond the cut line to avoid unprinted borders. Keep crucial typography and logos at least 3mm inside the cut edge.

Die cutting is an industrial print finishing process that cuts paper, card, plastic, or self-adhesive vinyl into custom non-rectangular shapes. A bespoke steel-rule cutting die—featuring razor-sharp blades formed to your exact vector contour—is mounted onto a heavy-duty hydraulic platen press. Under tons of calibrated pressure, the die stamps cleanly through the printed sheet, delivering micro-accurate, repeatable shapes across thousands of copies.
Artwork must be supplied as a print-ready vector PDF with a dedicated top layer named 'Dieline' or 'Cutting Guide'. The cut path must be a 1pt vector stroke coloured in 100% Spot Magenta (C:0 M:100 Y:0 K:0) and set to 'Overprint Stroke'. Crease/score lines should be formatted as dashed lines, and perforations as dotted lines. Always include a 3mm external bleed beyond the cut contour and a 3mm internal safe quiet zone.
Through cutting (die cutting) slices completely through both the face paper/card and any underlying liner, creating standalone shaped items like shaped business cards, tags, and box cartons. Kiss cutting adjusts cutting depth to slice cleanly through only the top self-adhesive vinyl or sticker layer, leaving the backing sheet intact so individual stickers can be peeled off effortlessly.
Yes! Steel-rule dies are engineered with combined cutting blades, blunt rounded creasing rules, and micro-toothed perforating blades on the same die platen. In a single press cycle, your product can be perimeter cut, creased for clean folding without fibre cracking, and perforated for tear-off voucher slips or ballot stubs.
Our industrial platen and cylinder presses handle a vast array of substrates, from lightweight 120gsm paper and self-adhesive sticker stocks up to 450gsm silk board, 600gsm kraft, 700gsm heavy duplexed card, 4mm Correx fluted polypropylene, and solid plastic vinyls.
Absolutely! In fact, the highest-impact print pieces combine multiple finishes. We regularly print, apply Soft-Touch or Matt lamination, add metallic hot foil blocking or 3D raised Spot UV varnish, and finally precision die-cut the finished piece into a bespoke shape with perfect register.
