When running a marketing campaign in the UK, getting your message directly into the hands of your target audience remains one of the most effective conversion strategies. At Printways.co.uk, we’ve printed thousands of successful commercial campaigns. we know firsthand that choosing the right dimensions, paper stock, and fold type dictates how your readers engage with your content.

Whether you are designing a compact pocket guide or a massive multi-panel menu, this full guide covers everything you need to know about folded leaflet printing, from standard A3 to DL formats, to ensure your next print run is flawless.

Understanding Standard Leaflet Dimensions

Selecting the right flat size before folding is the foundation of your print architecture. The flat size is the total dimensions of your paper before any creases are applied. Here is a breakdown of the most popular UK leaflet sizes and their commercial uses.

A3 Folded Leaflet Printing

(297mm x 420mm)

As the largest standard leaflet size, A3 provides a massive canvas for your artwork.

  • Common Configurations: Half-folded to an A4 4-page booklet or tri-folded to a 6-page presentation.
  • Best Used For: High-impact corporate brochures, large takeaway menus, detailed product catalogs, and event site maps.

A4 Folded Leaflet Printing

(210mm x 297mm)

The workhorse of the print industry, balancing cost-effectiveness with ample design space.

  • Common Configurations: A4 folded to A5 (4 pages) or A4 folded to DL (tri-fold/z-fold creating 6 panels).
  • Best Used For: Trade show handouts, local government pamphlets, price lists, and service breakdowns.

A5 Folded Leaflet Printing

(148mm x 210mm)

Compact, affordable, and easy to distribute. The go-to size for localized marketing.

  • Common Configurations: A5 folded to A6 (single half-fold creating 4 small pages).
  • Best Used For: Direct mail drops, letterbox marketing, local service advertisements, and street handout.

A6 & DL Folded Leaflets

DL (99mm x 210mm) | A6 (105mm x 148mm)

Ideal for highly portable, pocket-sized promotional materials.

  • DL Leaflets: Exactly 1/3 of an A4 sheet. The universal standard for rack cards and standard business envelopes.
  • A6 Leaflets: Often half-folded to A7, perfect for discount vouchers, loyalty programs, and event schedules.

The physical structure of your fold path dictates the reader's journey. At Printways.co.uk, our precision folding equipment handles multiple fold paths. these are the three most popular:

1. The Half-Fold (4 Panels)

The simplest and most classic option. A single crease down the center of the sheet folds the paper in half, resulting in a front cover, a back cover, and a 2-page internal spread.

Vibe: Traditional, straightforward, and easy to read. Perfect for A4 folded to A5 formats.

2. The Tri-Fold / Letter Fold (6 Panels)

Often referred to as a roll fold, this creates a classic 6-panel leaflet (3 panels per side). The right panel folds inward first, and the left panel folds over the top of it.

Vibe: Sequential and organized. The reader is forced to open the front cover to reveal an inner flap, before opening fully.

3. The Z-Fold (6 Panels)

Also known as an accordion fold, the paper is creased twice in opposite directions. It gives a zig-zag shape.

Vibe: Fluid and expansive. Springs open naturally. This lets the reader to view a single, spanning graphic right away.

Choosing the Right Paper Weight & Finish

Paper thickness is measured in GSM (Grams per Square Metre). The GSM directly impacts the perceived quality of your brand.

Paper Weights (GSM)

  • 130gsm – 150gsm: The standard for cheap leaflet printing in the UK. Ideal for high-volume distributions, letterbox drops, and takeaway menus.
  • 170gsm – 250gsm: A substantial, premium weight that feels authoritative. Offers excellent opacity so heavy ink won't show through.
  • 300gsm+: Luxury thickness. Crucial Note: Any stock above 250gsm must be mechanically scored (creased) before folding to prevent fiber and ink cracking along the spine.

Finish Options

  • Silk: Smooth, muted finish with a slight sheen. The industry standard offering excellent readability without excessive glare.
  • Gloss: Highly reflective and vibrant. Makes high-resolution photography pop, but can be difficult to read under direct light.
  • Uncoated: Textured, natural feel that absorbs ink deeply. Highly recommended if your customer needs to write on the leaflet.

Technical Setup: How to Print a 3-Fold Leaflet Correctly

The number one mistake graphic designers make when submitting artwork for a Tri-Fold (Roll Fold) leaflet is assuming all three panels should be exactly the same width.

If all three panels are identical, your leaflet will not fold flat. The innermost panel will catch on the outer crease, causing it to buckle.

A4 Tri-Fold Correct Setup (297mm x 210mm)

  • Front Cover (Outer Right): 100mm
  • Back Cover (Center): 100mm
  • Inner Flap (Outer Left): 97mm (3mm narrower to allow it to tuck inside cleanly)

General Printways.co.uk Artwork Requirements:

  • Bleed Area: Add a 3mm bleed margin. Ensure background colors/images stretch all the way to this line.
  • Safe Zone: Keep all critical text/logos at least 3mm-5mm away from trimmed edges and fold lines.
  • Color Space: Always export your final PDF in CMYK color mode (not RGB).
  • Resolution: Ensure all images are a minimum of 300 DPI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are folded leaflets cheaper than stitched brochures?

Yes. Because folded leaflets are printed on a single large sheet of paper and folded mechanically, they eliminate the need for collating and saddle-stitching (stapling). This makes a 6-page A4 folded leaflet greatly cheaper to produce than an 8-page A4 stapled booklet.

What is the most popular folded leaflet size in the UK?

An A4 sheet folded to DL size (tri-fold) is the most commercially popular format in the UK. It is incredibly cost-effective, perfectly sized for standard display racks, and cheap to mail out in standard envelopes.

Can I create custom flyer designs online before printing?

Absolutely. If you don't have professional graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, you can use platforms like Canva to design your layout. Just remember to set up your custom dimensions with the 3mm narrower inner panel if you are designing a tri-fold, and ensure you export the final file with crop marks and bleeds activated.
