Why 0.9mm Motor-Grade Material Matters

Not all magnetic material is the same. Thin fridge-magnet sheet (typically 0.4mm–0.6mm) will lift or fly off a moving vehicle at anything above roughly 30mph. it simply does not have enough magnetic pull. Every sign we produce for vehicle use is made from 0.9mm motor-grade magnetic sheet, which delivers roughly 90 lbs of pull force per square foot. That is the thickness specification professional signage makers use for motorway-safe vehicle magnets.

For non-vehicle uses. shop fronts, racking, industrial labels. 0.9mm also gives the sign enough body to sit flat and stay flat, rather than curling at the corners.

How Magnetic Signs Are Made

We print onto a white printable vinyl that is then laminated to the magnetic backing. This matters because printing directly onto magnetic sheet gives a dull, low-contrast finish and offers no protection against scuffing. Our approach gives you a sharp, vivid image on top of a protective surface, with the magnet bonded cleanly underneath.

• Step 1 — Print: Your artwork is printed in full colour with UV-resistant pigmented inks.
• Step 2 — Laminate: A protective matt or gloss laminating film is applied for scuff, moisture and UV resistance.
• Step 3 — Mount: The printed vinyl is bonded to 0.9mm motor-grade magnetic sheet.
• Step 4 — Cut: Each sign is trimmed to your exact size, with rounded corners on request.
• Step 5 — Inspect & Pack: Every sign is checked for edge quality and magnet flatness before dispatch.

Standard Sizes and Common Applications

Will Magnetic Signs Stick to Your Surface?

Magnetic signs only work on ferrous (iron or steel) surfaces. They will not stick to aluminium, plastic, fibreglass, composite or carbon-fibre panels. Before ordering, test the intended surface with an ordinary fridge magnet. if it grips firmly, a magnetic sign will hold. If it slides or falls, the surface is not magnetic and you would be better served by a printed vinyl or rigid sign.

Some modern vehicle panels mix materials: a steel door with an aluminium tailgate, for example. Always test each panel individually rather than assuming a vehicle is fully steel.

Looking After Your Magnetic Signs

Magnetic signs last for years if they are treated well. and they fail quickly if they are not. The single biggest cause of lost or damaged vehicle magnets is dirt trapped between the magnet and the panel, which reduces grip and can abrade paintwork. The routine is simple: remove the signs weekly, wipe both the magnet face and the vehicle panel clean, allow both to dry fully, then reapply.

• Remove and clean at least once a week, and always before a long motorway journey.
• Store flat in a cool, dry place. never rolled, folded or stacked under weight.
• Avoid applying to freshly painted panels (wait at least 90 days) or to dirty, dusty or waxed surfaces.
• Never leave signs on a vehicle in storage for months at a time, mainly where moisture can collect.
• Bring signs indoors during prolonged hot spells. extreme heat plus sunlight can encourage the magnet to lift at the edges.

Every use is different. This is why custom sizing is a core part of what we do rather than an afterthought. Send us the width and height you need in millimetres, or the exact measurements of the panel you are covering. we will quote and produce to that specification. We regularly produce magnetic signs to non-standard dimensions for van rear doors, curved-bonnet patches, industrial racking labels and bespoke shop-front panels.

Artwork and File Setup

Supply artwork as a PDF or high-resolution image at 300dpi for the intended print size, CMYK colour mode where possible. In practice, most of our customers send vector logos and a brand guideline and let our studio lay the sign out. that is fine. we will always send a proof for approval before production.
